What does lactate threshold mean?
When you go out for an easy ride or run, you are burning a mixture of fat and carbohydrates. When you start going really fast, you are burning mostly carbohydrate. Your threshold is the point when you start switching from burning fat to mostly carbohydrate. When you are switching fuels, this is when the lactate level in your blood starts to increase faster than you can clear it. Your lactate threshold is one of most important determinants for establishing your heart rate training zones.

Why should you get  tested?
Using a formula to determine your heart rate training zones is not accurate. The best way to accurately determine your training zones is to be assessed in sub-maximal test on the bike or treadmill. Establishing your threshold is the best way to set your training zones. Training in the correct zone will improve your ability to burn fat and spare carbohydrate stores. It will also keep you from over training or potentially not training hard enough.

The Exercise Metabolic/V02 Test: Metabolic Efficiency Assessment
How metabolically efficient are you? Learning what type of fuel you burn when exercising is critical information for creating a fueling plan and to promote changing body composition.  An exercise metabolic assessment is a snapshot of your daily diet. The information from this test will show how many fat and total calories you are burning when exercising.

This test is performed by placing a soft flexible mask over your nose and mouth. Your bike will be connected to a Computrainer or if performing a running test you will be on the treadmill. You will be instructed to gradually work harder as oxygen is analyzed. Once you have completed the tests your heart rate training zones will be set. You will be given a report that shows how much fat and total calories you burn in each zone, threshold, peak V02, cycling watts/power or running speed at threshold.

Any athlete can benefit from knowing the type of fuel they burn in each training zone. The data from your test will allow me to design a very individual fueling strategy for your next race.
